I support non-criminalization of LGBTQ persons, the position of the Catholic Church is clear on it – Afenyo-Markin
Afenyo - Markin
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the deputy majority leader, has stated that he agrees with the Catholic Church's stance on criminalizing homosexuals.
He stated that in his opinion, a person who claims to be a lesbian or gay should not be imprisoned for it.
The Effutu legislator stated, "I am a Catholic and the position of the Catholic church is very clear, the law is very, and I don't think that what the church has said I should hold a contrary view to it," in an interview on Tuesday, November 28.
"The church claims that, in accordance with African tradition, it is against both same-sex marriage and the criminalization of anybody who identifies as that sexual orientation. I am a Catholic, and I agree with what the Catholic church says.
"It will be wrong to criminalize somebody's sexual orientation, and so be it," emphasized the speaker, citing the Catholic Church. In my opinion, a person who declares themselves to be homosexual or lesbian shouldn't be imprisoned for it.
His remarks follow those made by Cardinal Peter Turkson, the chancellor of the Pontifical Academies of Sciences, who stated that homosexuality does not need to be made a crime.
He explained what has resulted in efforts to enact laws against homosexual activities “What caused all of this is an attempt to link some foreign donations and grants to certain positions… in the name of freedom, in the name of respect for rights”.
He therefore stated that, “Neither should this position become an imposition on cultures which are not yet ready to accept stuff like that.”
